Project 4:

By definition, Exhibit Design engages all of the-senses and requires a wide focus, going beyond specific disciplines to create total experiences. As an Exhibit Designer you are to create a temporary interactive structure that will communicate your client's message in a tradeshow environment. For this project you will work collaboratively and individually to discover new techniques and formats for communicating emotionally as well as intellectually, with the goal of developing tools that will translate to many different areas of the design industry.

For this assignment you will work as part of a 3 person design team responsible for the trade shows and corporate events for MuchMusic. It is your job to take MuchMusic's message and communicate it to a key audience of viewers, customers, salespeople, stockholders, and the media. You must incorporate technology and design to create functional ideas that support your client's needs.

In this world of interactive communication, you must consistently establish an en effective connection between technology and design. Technology allows the process to work. Design attracts the interest, inspires participation and produces the result. By orchestrating the different elements of design: sight, sound, mood, color, text, and image, traffic is directed into and through your exhibit to ensure the most efficient and effective use of space.

As you work on this project, you'll receive input from a select group of exhibit designers, graphic artists, and MuchMusic representatives along the way.

Ciient-Overview:-MuehMusic, a division of-CHUM Urnit3dT is considered to be tha^Nf jiaP^Musi" station!. A Canadian network dedicated to providing an entertaining, informative, and engaging look at popular music as it happens. CHUM Television Interactive is a media leader in providing Interactive Television in Canada and developing enhanced content for it's four channels - MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic, Citytv and Star!.

MuchMusic delivers well-known branded television content in news and information, music, entertainment and lifestyle categories via new media platforms including online, wireless devices and enhanced television. Their goal is to foster audience intimacy and build brand loyalty through the use of bulletin boards, chats, email newsletters, contests, polls, games and exclusive downloadable content.

Scope of work/Project Requirements: Your design team has been awarded a contract with MuchMusic to design their new interactive modular exhibit space. The exhibit space will premier at an upcoming trade show event in Toronto and will be the marketing and sales flagship for the company for the next 3 years. The Project Coordinator with MuchMusic has given you the following criteria for the design:

  • > The footprint for your exhibit must be no greater than 20' x 20'.
    > It must be a self-supporting structure which allows for 10' walk around area. =,
    > The height of your design can be no greater than 18' (This applies to the center 50% of your structure). The perimeter of your structure or remaining 50% can be no greater 10' high (see attached sketch).
    > You cannot hang anything from the ceiling of a convention center that helps support your exhibit.

Your exhibit space must include the following:

One small seating area for at least 4 people. Interactive TV monitors and video screens Reception/give away counter > Several computer (internet) stations

1 host and 2 MuchMusic executives will occupy the exhibit space that you design. The host will meet and greet the public and hand out free cd's, t-shirts, bottled water, etc. The host plays an important role in your design environment. You might want to put some thought into the outfits that they wear (design branding) in relation to the concept of your space. The MuchMusic executives will host meetings in the conference space with area stockholders, local cable company executives, and television/media representatives.

Your exhibit space is to be designed in a contemporary fashion (slick, clean look). The general public, salespeople, executives, etc. that visit your space should feel welcome, but you also want then to feel as though they are in an exclusive environment. What can the experience here that they can't experience at home watching TV?

Most trade show events are only in a given city for approximately 3 days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Your exhibit space must be designed to be built and taken down in a short period of time. Your exhibit structure will be used again at other trade shows across the country. Think about your exhibit as a modular kit.

Focus on the following before you begin the design process:

  • > Intended demographic (regional or national)
    > Age of focus group
    > Intended race (majority)
    >Social class of viewer
    > Gender and sexual orientation

You cannot add a full second floor to your design, but you can raise spaces with platforms or ramping. You will have a budget of approximately $150,000.00 to design and fabricate your exhibit space.

Your final presentation must be in a PowerPoint (or equal) format and should be at least 10 minutes long. You may use animation software, hand drawn delineations, models, or any other (approved) media in your presentation.
