Project 2B: Graphic design/package development for the interactive game industry is still a relatively new field, and as such its boundaries have yet to be truly explored. The games have been around in
different forms since the beginning of computers and in a lot of ways, were essential in the route that computers have taken in becoming a part of our every day hVes. Within the industry, game designers are treated with a mix of awe and fear, because design is not as predictable as artwork production, or as tangible as programming. And, more important,
it lacks formal documented procedures for predictable and repeated success.
Scenario: You have recently been hired by the Electronic Arts Company (EA Games) in Vancouver, BC http://www.ea.com/home/home.jsp to work as a key member on a newly formed design/marketing team whose job
it is to develop an exciting interactive video game for 2005. The Creative Art Dkector in your department has asked you to come up with the following in 12 days (Not much time, but a very realistic deadline in this industry):
o The front, spine, and back cover design (including character(s), associated imagery, text and typographic
information) for a jewel case, o An appropriate Entertainment Software Rating Board "ESRB" rating for the game (e.g. E = Everyone, T =
Teen, M = Mature), o Include the Electronic Arts logo in the design as well as the logo for the game system that you are designing
for (e.g. PlayStation, XBOX, etc.).
o A brief description (on the back panel) of the character(s), plot, features, story, and/or adventure, o Include at least 2 positive (yet fictitious) magazine reviews of the game on the back panel.
o At least 3 small windows (on the back panel) that display interesting scenes from the game. This is sometimes
called a "screen shot".
o Multiple sketches (on title-block) showing your ideas and concepts. o Don't forget your barcode, warning information, and translations if required.
During your first production team meeting, the Creative Art Director informs you that the game will be based upon a chicken character named "Flash". He stresses that Flash must be portrayed as a "good guy" who sometimes gets into trouble. This game will be the first in a series that revolve around the main character. So, you will want to introduce
him/her in some way on your package. The rest is up to you!
To start off you must produce two different (color marker) concept options for your design. You must also produce 10 additional sketches illustrating different text/type styles. This is due next class (3/7/05) and must be on title block. I'll also provide you each with a jewel case to use as your prototype.
The Creative Art Director is interested in seeing how well you work under pressure with "real world" deadlines. Time management is crucial to your success on this project.
This Is a brief concept driven assignment that's due 12 days from today on March I4a
