10m long “dinosaur teeth”

On our three-year long world trip, we visited many countries including Croatia, where we stayed on the big peninsula of Istria. Here we visited many locations one of which was Jama (cave) Baredine. A beautiful cave with stalagmites and stalactites, these icicles of minerals (stalagmites) has been formed over ten-thousands of years by dripping water. Stalactites are the same except they grow from the ground upwards. These stalactites and stalagmites grow 1mm in twenty to thirty years.

The cave has five chambers going diagonally downwards 132m. In the third chamber we saw a huge boulder which had fallen thousands of years ago. The tour guide also showed us some of the transparent stalactites; he held his powerful flashlight against one of them and turned it on. The stalactite shined white, he explained to us that this one in held no iron or copper. The next one, though, was bright orange so it in held lots of iron and copper.

On the surface we had +30° (in October), but after the fourth chamber the temperature became +14°. Also in this chamber we looked down a hole in the floor which went vertically down 82m to the lower lakes. Here we saw stalactites which were shaped like the Leaning Tower of Pisa and 10m long “dinosaur teeth”. In the 5th chamber we saw the upper lake in which we found a mysterious Man Fish an endemic animal species of this Karst region. On the other side of the lake was a stalactite shaped like Virgin Mary.

The visit was my science lesson. This type of lesson is more informative and gives a better impression then information out of a school book.
